The Resolution Mirage
Why most resolutions fail before February - and how to break the cycle this year.
Did you know that most New Year’s resolutions fail before February?
The momentary thrill of a fresh start quickly fades, and by March, only 8% of people are still on track.
Why?
Because resolutions often set us up to fail before we even begin. Let’s explore why this happens and how you can make 2025 different.
The Truth About Resolutions
According to Merriam-Webster, a resolution is “The act of finding an answer or solution to a conflict, problem, etc.”
But here’s the thing: most resolutions are spur-of-the-moment decisions, not answers to deep questions.
Here’s why they often fail:
1. They’re Done in a Hurry
Most people treat resolutions like a checklist of things to change.
But meaningful change requires honest reflection. What truly needs to shift in your life, and why?
2. The Fun Is Missing
Change feels hard. But it doesn’t have to be joyless.
When you focus on the benefits and values tied to your goals, the process becomes exciting - not exhausting.
3. They’re Not S.M.A.R.T.
Ever heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals?
Your resolutions should be: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
For example: "I will read 12 books this year” is better than “I’ll read more.”
4. They’re Not Written Down
Research by Dr Gail Matthews found that you’re 42% more likely to achieve goals just by writing them down.
Imagine if your resolutions were visible every day. Wouldn’t they stay on your mind longer?
5. No Accountability
No matter how motivated you are, life happens. Challenges arise.
Having someone hold you accountable makes all the difference. Find a partner, a coach, or even a group to check in with.
The Mindset Shift You Need
Most resolutions fail because we focus on what to change, not why.
What if you paused and asked:
Why do I want this change?
What’s at stake if I don’t make this shift?
Who can walk this journey with me?
When you shift from superficial fixes to meaningful intentions, your goals stop being burdens. They become part of who you are becoming.
What Can You Do Differently?
Take time to reflect deeply before setting resolutions.
Add an element of fun and reward to your process.
Use the S.M.A.R.T. framework to shape your goals.
Write them down where you’ll see them every day.
Find someone who will hold you accountable.
As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
So, what will you do differently this year?
What’s one resolution worth committing to - and how will it transform your life?
Write it down. Make it specific. And share it with someone who will hold you accountable.
To your best year yet,
Bobby Joachim (The Godfather)

This is quite timely. It has given me clarity. Now I know better how to approach my resolution.
Before now, I just knew I would read all John Piper's books this year. Let me go find them and write down how many they are.
The same will go to other "numerical" resolutions.
God bless The Godfather.💥
Thank you so much,
Always grateful 🙏
Happy new year sir
